Notes:Sir Archibald Alison, first baronet (17921867), historian and lawyer, was born in December 1792 in Shropshire, in the parsonage of his father, Archibald Alison (17571839). Some of his works include History of Europe during the French Revolution and its sequel, the History of Europe from Waterloo and the Accession of Louis Napoleon. He became sheriff of Lanarkshire in 1835. He was made a baronet in 1852. He was an ardent Tory and this was reflected both in his writings and his work as sheriff.
