Notes: | Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, was a British military leader and politician and served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, 1828-29 and 1830-33. Anglesey was sympathetic to the Catholic cause, and his relations with Wellington and the home secretary, Robert Peel, were strained as a result. His public encouragement of the Catholic Association eventually led to his recall in January 1829. Convinced that Ireland could not be governed by force alone, Anglesey consistently urged the necessity of ameliorative reforms but rapidly lost patience with the Irish when they appeared unappreciative of his efforts on their behalf.
