Notes: | William Allingham was an Irish poet who was born in Ballyshannon in Co. Donegal. His main literary work is Laurence Bloomfield in Ireland, a verse novel dealing with the contemporary Irish problems of land and landlordism. However, he is better remembered for some of his short poems, such as The Fairies. He was married to the well-known water colour painter Helen Allingham and some of his most important friendships were with Alfred Tennyson, D. G. Rossetti, and Thomas Carlyle. He died in Hampstead in 1889 and is buried in Ballyshannon. Physical description: 3 pages. more |
