Notes: | Photographic print (embossed with "W.D. Hogan, / 56 Henry St., / Dublin." lower right) of the Custom House, Customs Quay after it was set on fire by the I.R.A. in 1921 in an attempt to disrupt British rule in Ireland. The fire blazed for five days, destroying a vast quantity of public records (parish records of Irish births, marriages and deaths going back to the Middle Ages) and the heat was so intense that the dome melted - the stonework was still cracking because of cooling five months later. Gandon's interior was completely destroyed and the building underwent serious reconstruction. The dome and drum were completely rebuilt in Ardbraccan limestone as opposed to the original Portland stone. Physical description: 1 photograph : gelatin silver print ; 13.9 x 19.1 cm. more |
