Summary:Mathew Carey (1760-1839) was an Irish born publisher and economist. Sparks writes to him - "I do not understand you, when you speak of my 'earliest and most inveterate prejudices' respecting Ireland. Ever since I was old enough to have prejudices of any sort, they have been the other way, and I am at a loss to conjecture on what ground you have formed your opinion. No benevolent or generous mind, no friend of the freedom and rights of man, as I conceive, can withhold his sympathy and deep interest in the condition of Ireland, or differ much from you in his sentiments of that oppressed and ill-fated people...". Jared Sparks (May 10, 1789 - March 14, 1866) was an American historian, educator, and Unitarian minister. He served as President of Harvard University from 1849 to 1853.
