Notes:James Hamilton (17691829), teacher of languages, is thought to have been born at Dublin, where he was taught for four years at a school kept by Beatty and Mulhall, two Jesuit priests. James Hamilton invented the Hamiltonian linguistic system and is the one who popularized interlinear translations of Greek and Latin classics. The system attracted a large following, and the technique was applied to the teaching of French, Italian, and German as well.
