The Philharmonic Concerto was commissioned by the Commercial Union Insurance Company for the Bicentennial Tour of the USA by the London Philharmonic Orchestra

The first performance was given by the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Bernard Haitink at the Royal Festival Hall, London on 31October, 1976
