Copy of ALS from Gladstone at Hawarden Castle, Chester, on Curton Maynooth headed notepaper, informing the Duke that he should accept one of the two Garters now vacant. Says that the "request is tendered to you with the sanction of the Queen". The other Garter has been offered to the Duke of Argyll. Asks the Dukeof Leinster to remember him warmly to the Duchess of Leinster.
