| Summary: | Correspondence relating to an incident between Mr. Adam Ward, the son of Mr. Arthur Ward of 52 Townsend Street, Belfast, and Constables Gwynne and Gillis. The incident took place at Peter's Hill, Belfast, on Saturday 13th May 1865. Includes original letters, copy letters and newspaper reports along with a copy of the Belfast Police Court Newspaper Report of the incident together with letters to and from Sir Hugh McCalmont Cairns, M.P. for Belfast at Westminister. Also copy letters and replies from the Inspector General of Constabulary at Dublin Castle, Colonel John Stewart Wood. The case aroused great deal of public interest because of the challenge to Police behavior and it was vigorously pursued by Mr. Ward despite the considerable evasion of the Chief Inspector who presumably was very uncomfortable with the situation. The Hansard Reports are included in newsprint form from the House of Commons in June 1865, with Sir Robert Peel's reply. These are tipped in with further reports entitled "Sir Robert Peel Again". The correspondence and clippings undoubtedly belonged to Mr. Arthur Ward, a member of the distinguished Belfast family. |
