| Summary: | First letter, 1 page, address "Kings Bench Walk", n.d. [annotated in pencil 3 June 1894]. Moore writes "Shorter says that he read your translation with pleasure ... in his opinion the interest is not sufficiently sustained for two numbers ... I am taking it to the Fortnightly. If Harris does not print it I will send it back to you." Second letter written six weeks later, 2 1/2 pages, n.d. [annotated in pencil 25 July 1894]. Moore writes "I should have written to you before if I had not been engaged trying to finish my book [probably his best-known work "Esther Waters"] before I go abroad ... Your article is in this month's Fortnightly. I have heard people say that your translation of Faust is the very best they ever saw ... I have spoken to Walter Scott [Moore's publisher] about the Tourgueneff vol. there will be no difficulty about it. The best way will be to get Harris to have the other two stories set up and then we can send the proofs to Walter Scott ... Walter Scott might issue the book in the spring ... You said you were translating another story by Tourgueneff...". |
