|Main Creator:||Independent Newspapers (Firm)|
The Shannon hydro-electric scheme at Ardnacrusha, a few miles from Limerick city, was a major project undertaken by the new Irish Free State in the mid-1920s. It was built under the leadership of the German firm Siemens-Schuchertwerke. Works commenced in 1925 after the passing of the Shannon Electricity Act, 1925. The scheme was the beginning of the electrification of the country and led to the establishment of the Electricity Supply Board (ESB).
