Summary: | William Gogan was arrested in January 1920 for the display of a Republican ballad in one of the family's shops. He was sentenced to three months' imprisonment in Mountjoy Jail, with a further three unless he undertook to keep the peace, under the D.O.R.A. (Defence of the Realm Act). From the day of his arrest to that of his release, he wrote a detailed journal of his imprisonment in a series of manuscript exercise books, apparently seven in all. The first book (in chronological sequence) in the archive is numbered '2', and book number 1 appears to be missing. The journals include detailed records of daily events and routine in the jail, including sketches, details of conversations, etc. Books numbered '6' and '7' include a detailed record of the Mountjoy hunger strike of April 1920, when 60 Republican prisoners (many of them held without proper trial) refused food in pursuit of a demand for prisoner-of-war treatment or release. |
