Notes: | Revised and extended Ms draft for the unpublished second edition of Thomas McKieran's earlier autobiography "Experiences of a British Veteran Soldier" published in 1892. 368 leaves of white ruled paper including 10 pages of related notes, all closely written in a clear hand with numerous deletions, revisions, and overlays of revised text in the same hand throughout. Thomas McKiernan was born in Granard, Co. Longford in 1838. He enlisted in the 3rd Regiment of Foot on March 17th, 1853 and was posted to Naas, Co. Kildare. In 1854 he joined the 50th Queen's Own Regiment and served in Malta, Turkey, Ceylon, New Zealand, and Australia before settling in Exeter, England. He held the rank of Colour Sergeant. On retirement from the army, he worked in the prison and custom's service. He married twice and his first wife, who was Irish, and children accompanied him on some of his postings abroad. In 1892, he published "Experiences of a British Veteran Soldier", an earlier and shorter version of his autobiography, at Aberavon, Port Talbot in Wales.
