"Maia" is the larger plane and "Mercury" the smaller.
In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Foynes had a seaplane terminus that was built to handle flying boats as they arrived and departed on the transatlantic journey. However, in 1945, Shannon Airport was built and Foynes was slowly phased out as the main port for aircraft to touchdown.
