Notes:Caption previously read "Soldier inspecting a bombed factory".

The photo is taken from the south west looking north east - the large safe door behind the soldier is the PROI Strong Room where documents were kept overnight for readers returning the next day. In the event, numerous valuable documents were saved by being stored there undisturbed during the occupation by Anti-Treaty forces (Apr to June 1922) and avoiding the explosion and fire on 30 June 1922.

The machine shown on the table is a milling-grinding implement for packing explosives into mine casings and grenades. Reference to this equipment was found among the fragments of papers thrown into the sky and blown over 17km away to Howth, Co Dublin see NLI MS 13,845.
