Hepenstall. [Lieutenant Edward Lambert Hepenstall] The Walking Gallows
Illustration [cropped, portion top right lacking] to W.J. Fitzpatrick's 1866 publication "Sham Squire" [concerning the informer Francis Higgins]. Lieutenant Edward Lambert Hepenstall of the Wicklow Militia became known as 'The Walking Gallows' due to his actions in 1798. Whole length, Hepenstall walking to left in uniform and cocked hat, carrying a man on his back hung by a noose around his neck; vignette.
