Father Bannon went from being a parish priest in St. Louis to a chaplain with the First Missouri Confederacy Infantry, ministering to the men in the field, the only chaplain on either side to do so. He later served as a diplomat for the Confederacy in Europe. After the war, Father Bannon became a most popular preacher in Ireland.
