Summary: | The composition of this illustration is inspired by a famous 1891 oil painting entitled 'Perseus and Andromeda', by Lord Frederic Leighton, (1830-1896), that was displayed in the Royal Academy of Arts, London in 1891. The painting is now in the collection of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Erin, the female personification of Ireland, is held captive by a dragon [England], on whose wings are written the words 'Tyranny' and 'Coercion'; Gladstone is depicted as the hero Perseus, seated on the back of Pegasus, [the flying horse], swooping in to save Ireland from English tyranny with the promise of Home Rule [which is written on the hilt of the sword that he holds] for Ireland. [In Greek mythology, Perseus saves Andromeda, a daughter of a king who was chained to rocks as a sacrifice, and who was about to be ravaged by Cetus, a large sea monster]. |
