What our English visitors saw
Countryman. - "Yes, my lady, there were hundreds of people living about here, until the other day the Government sent down the sojers [sic, soldiers] and polis [sic, police] with battering-rams and pertroleum - and look at the place now. Shure there isn't a house standin' for miles about except the polis-barracks [sic, police barracks] up there.".
