Summary:A caricature of Hubert George de Burgh-Canning, 2nd Marquess of Clanricarde (1832-1916), considered one of the worst absentee landlords in Ireland - his 52,000 acre estate in Portumna, Co. Galway was the main target during the 1887 Plan of Campaign which fought for fair rents for tenants [led by members of the Irish Parliamentary Party]; thousands of families had been evicted from his estate during the late 1880's, resulting in their mass destitution.
