John Bull.-"Oh! Pat, my dear crisis has come upon me; the Russian is going to pounce on India and take it from me. Won't you help me, as of yore, to keep it?".
Text printed underneath image continues: Pat. - "No! - I have poured out my blood like water for you these hundreds of years past, and look at me now. - Go, and with your niggers fight your battles in future". From 1880 the British took control of Afghanistan's foreign affairs until Emir Amanullah Khan regained them after the Anglo-Afghan Treaty of 1919. Some months after this image was published, the Delimitation Protocol Between Great Britain and Russia was signed in London on 10 September, 1885.
