| Summary: | John Poyntz Spencer, 5th Earl Spencer, (1835-1910) then serving as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland is depcited at right of the figure of Justice; Spenser attracted much criticism for his handling of a group of murders in Maamtrasna, Co. Mayo which saw an innocent man, Myles Joyce, hanged in Galway in 1882. In 1882 many were sentenced to penal servitude for an alleged conspiracy at Crossmaglen, Co. Armagh, despite the fact that no one was injured by any act by those imprisoned. |
