Summary: | Lithographic illustration of Joe Brady by William Theodore Parkes [signed "W.T.P. lower right of image, within frame]. Illustration published as an "Extra Supplement Weekly Freeman, April 14th, 1883" (printed at top of sheet]. Brady killed the Permanent Undersecretary Thomas Henry Burke [the most senior Irish civil servant] on Saturday 6 May 1882 as he walked to the Viceregal Lodge in the company of the newly installed Chief Secretary for Ireland Lord Frederick Cavendish (who was killed by Tim Kelly). The Irish National Invincibles, (better known as the Invincibles), that Brady and Kelly were members of, were a radical splinter group of the I.R.B. [Irish Republican Brotherhood]. |
