The spiked gun
The gunner of H.M.S. "Whig," whilst engaged in a desperate encounter with the enemy, rushes to his last gun,-when it is brought to his memory that he himself had a short time previously, in a fit of passion, or madness, spiked the very weapon which would have secured Victory to him.
