Summary:Colour chromolithograph print features caricatures of Tipperary landlord Arthur Smith Barry, known as ‘Black-Smith Barry’, who evicted his tenants for withholding rent in solidarity with tenants in Cork; Hubert George de Burgh-Canning, 2nd Marquess of Clanricarde (1832-1916), considered one of the worst absentee landlords in Ireland - his 52,000 acre estate in Portumna, Co. Galway was the main target during the 1887 Plan of Campaign which fought for fair rents for tenants [led by members of the Irish Parliamentary Party]; thousands of families had been evicted from his estate during the late 1880's, resulting in their mass destitution; tenants were also evicted from the estate owned by Wybrants Olphert in Donegal and Charles Ponsonby's estate in Youghal. The Duke of Abercorn was the chairman of the Donegal Central Committee of the Olphert Defence Fund.
