"Mak' siccar, Willie!"
[On this journey to Midlothian Mr. Gladstone was presented with an enormous cudgel with the inspiration "Mak' siccar (make sure) Willie". The cudgel was presented by a descendent of the famous Kirkpatrick mentioned in the "Scottish Chiefs," who, when he heard that the English nominee to the Scottish throne was "almost dead", rushed in with his sword to "mak' siccar" (make sure) and despatch him. The above shows the application of the story-and of the stick]/
