| Notes: | Linton (1812-1897), poet, political reformer, intimate friend of Mazzini and the best wood engraver of his day. In 1867 he moved to America, where he settled in Hamden, near New Haven. He continued to engrave, at first sending his blocks to New York for printing, but later buying his own press. As the most esteemed wood engraver to to come from Europe, he made a great stir in America, especially through his engraving classes at the Cooper Institute, New York, where he was described as 'the centre and soul of whatever was progressive in wood engraving.'
