| Notes: | "The edition is commonly known as 'Toland's', but he was not the editor. He remarked elsewhere that he would have omitted several of the works."--Coleridge. John Toland did write the life of Milton printed in Volume 1, which is signed and dated: I.T. Sept. 3. 1698. Title page in red and black. Half-title (pi1r with port. on verso) reads "Miltons historical and political works". Variant: with an additional half-title (²pi1r) with verso blank which precedes "The life of Milton". This half-title is not reflected in the above pagination statement. The frontispiece portrait of Milton (A1v) is signed: Gul. Faithorne ad vivum delin. et sculpsit. Actual place of publication from Wing. In three volumes, each with separate dated title page. Volume 3 has title: Joannis Miltoni opera omnia Latina. Internal title pages in volumes 1 and 2 are dated 1694. Volumes 1 and 2 have continuous pagination and register. Volume 1 includes index for "The history of Britain". The page preceding p. 836 is numbered 819. The first leaf of Volume 3 is blank. Vols. II and III wanting. There are several title-pages, variously dated, 1694-98. Physical description: 3 v.
