Notes:Information from users of NLI Flickr Commons: Members of the Railway Protection Repair and Maintenance Corps at Inchicore Works, Dublin, converting Lancia Armoured Cars for use on railways. This work was carried on between 1921 and 1923. Over 50 original open top Lancia Armoured Cars were converted at Inchicore, but only 7 were converted to rail cars. The road or highway version of the Lancias converted at Inchicore were used by the Irish army until WWII, and were known as the ''Hooded Terrors''. No Lancia rail cars survive, although one was kept in a siding at Inchicore until the 1950s.

This photograph was printed in the Sunday Independent, 3rd December 1922, with the following caption: ''A NEW PATROL CAR. Armoured Lancia and Crossley cars are now being made at Inchicore works. Photo shows a new pattern of single turreted car to travel either on road or rail. These cars are proving of great use in these trying times.''

No armoured Lancia in the rail version survived, but three trucks in the highway version are still existing and can be found in the following museums: - Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, Holywood - Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) Museum, Belfast - Museo della Motorizz. Militare della Cecchignola, Rome, Italy The base of the armoured vehicle was the Lancia Triota truck. More information about the armoured Lancia on rails can be found in the following book: Martin, Karl (2002): "Irish Army Vehicles, transport and armour since 1922". Karl Martin. ISBN 0-9543413-0-9 (see pages 5 - 8).

The photo is indeed an armoured lancia rail car. The photo can be dated to pre 3/12/1922 as it appeared in a period newspaper of the day, on that date. Over fifty of the original open top armoured lancia cars were converted at the works but only seven were converted to rail cars and only two of them had turretts. The road going version of the inchicore converted lancias served with the irish army ontill ww11 and were known as the "hooded terrors". As peetthephotographer says there are no rail car survivors however there was one in a sideing at the works as late as the 1950s. there are three survivores of the original open top armoured lancia. (1) Ulster folk museum Belfast. restored by the RUC in the 90s (2) Rome museum Italy restored by a Mr Tony oliver in 1973 and later sold to the museum (3) Scotland with a private collector restored in the mid 70s I have more info on my flickr page. www.flickr.com/photos/vintary/sets/72157627096555484/

I thought this related piece of newsreel would be of interest. www.britishpathe.com/video/armoured-cars-1/query/inchicore It's from British Pathe and covers the building of these armoured cars at Inchicore in 1922.
