There are two copies of this work in the collection, one published in Dublin, and the second published in Edinburgh, twenty years later. This is a translation from the French, by M. Rollin, Rector of the University of Paris. General Charles Vallencey, first President of the Royal Irish Academy, had prompted Irishmen to interest themselves in the ancient history and social and cultural anthropology of the near and middle east, in the mistaken belief that the Irish were descended from the "Scythians". Patrick O Neill read Vallencey's works, and no doubt there was some connection between his interest in this work and the ideas of Vallencey.
