The conspiracy, allegedly fomented by the Jesuits in revenge for their being deprived of power in Portugal and in Portuguese settlements in Uruguay and Paraguay, was led by José Mascarenhas, duque de Aveiro, Francisco de Tavora, marquez de Tavora, and Leonora, marqueza de Tavora (NUC).
