Whole-length portrait of Francis Rawdon Chesney, seated, writing. Born at Annalong, County Down, in 1830 he submitted a report on the feasibility of constructing a Suez Canal; in 1837 he was awarded the Royal Geographical Society’s gold medal for his work relating to the expedition for the survey of the Rivers Euphrates and Tigris.
