Summary:Portrait of James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, (1612-1650), half-length, turned slighty to left, looking straight ahead, in armour. He was commander of the Royalist forces in Scotland during the Enligish Civil War. In 1650 he was captured and then sentenced to death. He was executed in on the 21st May, 1650, at the Market Cross of Edinburgh, Scotland, by hanging and quartering. In the background of the print to Montrose's right, one can see his execution being carried out. He was given a state funeral by Charles II of England.
