Destitution in Ireland. Failure of the potato crop
Illustration from "Pictorial Times", 22nd August, 1846 depicting a family outside their cottage, gathered around a pile of ruined potatoes. Two ducks stand at the gate into the garden. Behind the cottage are pigs and hens. In July 1845 the potato crops in Ireland were affected by the potato blight, causing what became known as 'the Great Famine', from ca. 1845 to 1849.
