Great meeting at the London Tavern, to oppose the increased grant to Maynooth.
Anti-Catholic protest to the Maynooth Grant, an act of parliament which was to increase the state grant to Maynooth College with additional funds for buildings. This act was part of Sir Robert Peel's strateegy of detaching moderate Catholics from the Repeal movement. The protest was to cause a split in the Conservative party and brought down in the end Peel's government in June 1846.
