Destitution in Ireland. Failure of the potato crop.
Newsclipping from page 121 of the 'Pictorial Times', from 22 August 1846 depicting a family outside their cottage, gathered around a pile of ruined potatoes. Two ducks stand at the gate into the garden; behind the cottage are pigs and hens. In July 1845 the potato crops in Ireland are affected by the potato blight, causing what became known as the Great Famine of 1845-1849.
