"Mr. Gladstone's 80th Birthday, 29th December, 1889" and "The above Cartoon is an enlarged fac-simile, hand coloured, of the exquisite etching prepared by the eminent artist, Mr. Henry Halliday, for the great Liberal Demonstration at St. James' Hall, March 13th, 1889. The beautiful Border, by the equally distinguished artist, Walter Crane, is from the "Golden Wedding" Album, presented July 26th, 1889, by the National Liberal Club to Mr. Gladstone; born 29th December, 1809; married 26th July, 1889". Erin and Britannia stand with their arms around each other - Britannia holds a shield in her left hand while Erin holds a harp in her right hand. They stand beneath a green ribbon trailed into the shape of a shamrock and bearing the inscription "Union of Hearts". An angel hovers nearby holding a banner that proclaims "Peace on earth. Goodwill towards men". This scene is framed by an ornamented frame which William Gladstone at thte top as St. George slaying the dragon; the dragon bears on his scales the words "Tyranny", "Prosecution", "Evictions" etc... Gladstone reaches out for Erin who is caught up in the coils of the snake. On either side of the frame stand a man and woman looking up at Gladstone rescuing Erin. Above the woman is a plaque "Church. Land. Education. 1868-74" and a ribbon with the words "Ireland" and "Justice" written on it. Above the man is a plaque "Land. Arrears. Laborers. 1880-5. Government & Land Purchase Bills. 1886" and a ribbon with the words "Home" and "Rule" inscribed on it.
