| Summary: | The devil and a judge hammer out law on an anvil amidst flames - the names of Irish towns and places where the law is perceived as being broken [and meetings of Daniel O'Connell's followers stopped or banned] radiate out - Cliften, Waterford, Tara, Tipperary, Mallow, Longford, Kilkenny, Cork, Dollybrook. In the background Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington is depicted smoking a pipe, stoking the fire in the kiln which contains human bones; he remarks "This is a hotter place than Waterloo". In the steam and smoke that rises from the kiln are the words "All kind of Smiths Work done here. Conspiracies forged at the shortest notice Chains, Manacles, Bolts, Handcuffs, Gags, &c. &c. &c. Supllied to order". |
