Charles Stewart Parnell, (1846-1891), visited W.E. Gladstone, (1809-1898), at his home at Hawarden, Flintshire, England, on 18th December, 1889, to discuss Home Rule for Ireland.

Parnell and Gladstone toasting each other over a plate of meat that has been cut and has the words "Irish Affairs" written on it. Two flags, one saying "Nottingham" and the other saying "Liverpool", are pinned into the meat. Above the two men is a banner saying "Welcome to Hawarden".
