| Notes: | Sir John Fiennes Twiselton Crampton was a diplomat who served in Turin, St. Petersburg, Brussels, Vienna and Berne. his most important post was Washington, where he served from 1845 to 1856. There he caused political furore over the recruitment of troops for the British Army in defiance of American law. Diplomatic relations were broken off. His last post was Madrid from 1860 to 1869, after which he retired and went to live in Bushey Park, Ireland, where he died. Selena Crampton, sister of John Crampton, frequently accompanied him on his diplomatic assignments, drawing and painting wherever she went. Children, horses, donkeys and dogs frequently appear in her sketches, and the landscape scenes, particulary around her home in Ireland and on the Rhine.
