C.W. Cole spent time in Ireland working as a special artist for the The Graphic reporting on the events relating to the Irish Land League, 1880. At Ballinrobe he covered the so-called Boycott Relief Expedition (12th - 26th November, 1880), in which the army escorted the 50 "Orange Labourers", employed to save Captain Boycott's crops, to and from their camp at Lough Mask.

This image is reproduced as a wood engraving in The Graphic, December 11th, 1880, under the title "The Joke of the Campaign: "Don't hurt the English Army", page 585.
