C.W. Cole spent time in Ireland working as a special artist for the The Graphic reporting on the events relating to the Irish Land League, 1880. At Ballinrobe, County Mayo, Ireland, he covered the so-called Boycott Relief Expedition (12th - 26th November, 1880) where the army had to escort the 50 "Orange Labourers", employed to save Captain Boycott's crops, to and from their camp at Lough Mask.

Image published in slightly altered form as a wood engraving entitled "Ah - I only said "Howld the Crops, and Howld the Rints," Just to Plase them Counthry folks", as part of a series of illustrations on page 577, under the title "The Land Agitation in Ireland", in the Graphic, December 11th, 1880.
