| Summary: | Satirical election handbill [black font printed on pink paper] for the Sinn Féin candidate Joseph McGuinness, running in the South Longford by-election, held on 9 May 1917 due to the death of the incumbent Irish Parliamentary M.P., John Phillips. Two women are depicted in the backgound at a bar drinking beer; in the foreground is another woman - there is a small Union Jack flag in the cap she wears and she is waving a flag marked "McKenna" - a reference to the fact that she is a supporter of Irish Parliamentary Party candidate Patrick McKenna. Joseph McGuinness won the seat in this by-election for Sinn Féin. Within the image are the illustrator's initials "F.M.K.". |
