New York : De Witt and Davenport, 1855.
Erroneously attributed to Josephine M. Bunkley. In fact it is the work of Mary Jane Stith Upshur and Charles Beale. Beale, claiming to be Bunkley's agent, contracted with De Witt & Davenport to publish Bunkley's manuscript narrative, and provided De Witt & Davenport with an account substantially rewritten by Upshur with Beale's assistance. Bunkley obtained an injunction preventing De Witt & Davenport from publishing that work under her name ; De Witt & Davenport then published the present title, omitting any mention of Bunkley's name. Cf. the Advertisement (p. [ix]-xii) in : Bunkley, Josephine M. The testimony of an escaped novice from the Sisterhood of St. Joseph...New York : Harper & Brothers, 1855.
