Attributed to Joseph Holloway (1861-1944). He was the architect who renovated the former Mechanic's Institute in Abbey St. on behalf of Annie Horniman, which became the Abbey Theatre (opened 27th December 1904). Holloway was an avid theatre goer and attender of first nights. He kept a diary in which he recorded not only his reactions to the plays but also his descriptions of Dublin's leading figures. He later donated these diaries to the National Library.
