According to Peter Harbison this drawing looks like a proof of the engraving of the plan reproduced as Plate 87 in Vol. I of Francis Grose's "Antiquities of Ireland", though the changes to "ars" of the last two letters of the word "Templer" made in ink on this drawing were not carried out in the final engraving.

Inscribed in ink on a piece of paper attached to the drawing by a pin: Remarks on the plate to be noticed in the description. The castle is vaulted in the ground floor & atic story [sic]. In the town of Thurles belonging to Mr. Matthews of Thomastown, Co. Tipperary.
