Two little guys with their father/grandfather at the pond in Herbert Park, Dublin. One has his net for catching pinkeens, but thought the other might have been controlling a model boat?
The Pergola and covered walkway just above the far side of the pond sadly fell victim to the Snowpocalypse of winter 2010/2011 and collapsed under the weight of snow and ice. That aside, if you visit Herbert Park today, this scene is completely unchanged.
Slow Loose Chippings told us that the "pond in Herbert Park was once the mill pond for the nearby Mill at Ballsbridge" and Niall McAuley provided us with a map showing that old mill pond.
P.S. "Going fishing" myself for a few days, but will be back in action at the end of the week...

In large it looks like they both have a net each. The boy on the left is holding the one with the visible trianglular net and the boy on the right has his submerged in the water. Thats how it looks on closer inspection at least. :)

@richiesphotos Think you're probably right. Got distracted by the two little sail boats on the pond...

This might have been me if the photo had been taken 10 years earlier. The pond in Herbert Park was once the mill pond for the nearby Mill at Ballsbridge. This later became the Bakery of Johnton, Mooney & O'Brien (all together now!), where my father spent his working life. This site was later to make a few people very rich,... (plus ca change). The Bakery is long gone and a posh Hotel and Apartments have replaced it.

@richiesphotos Rich, I see a line in the hand of the kid in the middle of the photo and I see this line in the water also, perhaps attached to one of the sail boats ( for retrieval purposes) what do you think? Carol are you off to play with the Mayfly!

I think this is the first photo I've checked in the nli photostream to see if I'm in it! The old millpond was slightly to the East of the current lake, but I'm sure it is fed from the same millstream. You can see the old millpond on the OSI historic 6" map at GeoHive from 1840ish. If you click back and forth between the 6" and the street map, you can see it move!

Having looked at the photo again I would say that they are not fishing rather they are all model boating. The Triangle talked about above is in my opinion a sail!.

@79549245@N06/ I agree, that is a sail below the rod not a net.

These little sailing boats are a whore. You set the sails to catch the breeze, choose your spot so the the wind will carry your boat straight across the lake, launch it, run around to the other side to be there ahead of it, and then watch as the breeze dies and your boat is becalmed in the middle of the pond. Then it starts to drift so that the sails aren't set correctly, and the breeze returns twice as strong but doesn't help anymore! You'd be tempted to wade out and get it, but ducks have been pooing in that water...

Great photo. Not only that the scene hasn't changed in more than a 4 decades, also the recreational activity is pretty much the same... @eyair/6149014095

Thanks Niall. And I see where the the present location of the pond was called the "Bleach Green", which suggests a Linen Mill, and would have a continuity with the "Calico Printing Factory"

@pondyacht/3096632694/in/set-72157625743362539/ See these kids with guide / retrieval lines. I am convinced this is what is going on in Herbert Park. You can see some lines at high resolution and I believe the shaft in the mans hand is for lifting the sailboats out of the water. You may have gone Fishing Carol (and you are being missed already!) but there is nobody in this picture fishing for Pinkeens!!!!! (in my opinion).

Wendy:
The pergola in the background was there till last year --now completely gone and area grassed over --suppose it needs less maintenance that way!

@79549245@N06 . The shaft is not in the mans hand, it is in the smaller childs hand behind him.
