Garnish Island (Ilnacullin) lies off Glengarriff, Co. Cork. The island has a mild climate due to the sheltered position and the influence of the Gulf Stream. The Italian style ornamental gardens were laid out between 1910 and 1913 by Harold Peto for John Annan Bryce, who had purchased the island from the British War Office in 1910. The Annan Bryce family bequeathed the Island to the people of Ireland in 1953, and the gardens are open to the public.
