Summary: | View of the star-shaped fortification known as Charles Fort, built around 1681-1685 overlooking Kinsale Harbour in County Cork, Ireland. The two massive corner-towers can be seen to be joined by a cross wall, behind which are the barracks built largely in the eighteenth century. At that time, Kinsale was already losing its powerful defensive position to Cork Harbour |

Notes: | From: Antiquities of Abbeys, Castles & c. & c. in Ireland, Vol. II This drawing is of the same subject as the drawing 2122 TX (2) 2, but taken from a different angle, and minus the ships. It is probable that Charles Vallencey (1725-1812) is the most likely candidate because he is the artist of 2122 TX (2) 2. It is also possible that Joseph Turner (ca. 1772-1835) is the artist of 2122 TX (2) 86 (A) 2122 TX (2) 86(B) beneath this drawing Title inscribed in ink l.c. on sheet Watermark u.l. on sheet is a large shield, crowned Physical description: 1 drawing image 11.5 x 18.4 cm., on sheet 26.7 x 18.3 cm.
