Notes: | A similar copy of this drawing by Gabriel Beranger (ca.1730-1817) is preserved as Wat.21 in the Special Collections of the Library of University College, Dublin From: Antiquities of Abbeys, Castles & c. & c. in Ireland, Vol. II This is a copy of an original by a professional artist whose name was probably Forster, as given here, rather than as Foster, as given elsewhere. A recent query as to the exact location of this castle, and as to whether it was in County Galway or County Roscommon, published in the"Journal of the Galway Historical and Archaeological Society 48", 1996, page 61, has so far failed to elict any information which could help to find the exact location. Francis Grose describes the castle as being in County Galway in Vol. II of his book "Antiquities of Ireland", London, 1791 (Plate 17) Title inscribed in ink l.c. on sheet Watermark u.l. on sheet is part of a shield with fleur-de-lys Physical description: 1 drawing image 14.1 x 12.3 cm., on sheet 18.3 x 26.7 cm. more |
